How often can you bill code 99203 for New Patient Consult?
If you have an existing patient but they have not been in the office for a couple of years can you bill the 99203 code?

Hi Kristen Gauthier!

Great question. For Evaluation & Management (E&M) coding, the patient is considered "new" if they have not presented to the practice for the last 3 years. The new patient E&M should be billed for their first visit (99201-99205), and thereafter established E&M codes (99211-99215) unless the patient has a 3 year lapse of presenting.

Hope this helps!
