We recently provided a dental clearance exam for a new patient. The patient has Medicare and a supplemental. We are an opted out Medicare provider, but a non-participating DME provider. Can we bill Medicare for the clearance exam?

Hi Guest!

Great question - no you cannot. As an opted out provider, Medicare state you should have Medicare beneficiaries who receive services from you sign a private contract, which in it states that the patient has been informed that you are officially opted out of Medicare, and that neither the provider/supplier or patient will file a claim to Medicare, so it is a cash pay situation.

Hope this helps!
