Hi. Some of our dental patients want us to submit the periodontal surgery they had at our dental office to medical to see if it is covered. We do not participate with any medical/medicare companies. We have told them from prior experience that it probably won't be covered under their medical or medicare plans.
Right now I need the dx code for periodontitis under medical. Also can we just submit the dental codes on the medical claim form. We do not have access to conversion codes.

Thanks so much for your help.

Hi guest!

Here are some ICD-10 coding options for you for periodontitis:

K05.211 Aggressive periodontitis, localized, slight
K05.212 Aggressive periodontitis, localized, moderate
K05.213 Aggressive periodontitis, localized, severe
K05.219 Aggressive periodontitis, localized, unspecified severity
K05.221 Aggressive periodontitis, generalized, slight
K05.222 Aggressive periodontitis, generalized, moderate
K05.223 Aggressive periodontitis, generalized, severe
K05.229 Aggressive periodontitis, generalized, unspecified severity
K05.311 Chronic periodontitis, localized, slight
K05.312 Chronic periodontitis, localized, moderate
K05.313 Chronic periodontitis, localized, severe
K05.319 Chronic periodontitis, localized, unspecified severity
K05.321 Chronic periodontitis, generalized, slight
K05.322 Chronic periodontitis, generalized, moderate
K05.323 Chronic periodontitis, generalized, severe
K05.329 Chronic periodontitis, generalized, unspecified severity
K05.4 - Periodontosis

As for the procedure codes, yes many medical insurers these day will accept the "D" codes on the medical claim for medically necessary services. If there is not a specific CPT code available to describe the procedure, you can use CPT code below and include a narrative report describing the procedure:
41899 - Unlisted procedure, dentoalveolar structures

Hope this helps!
